The Vitruvian Man – Leonardo da Vinci is probably the most well-known Vitruvian Man image and many people are familiar with it. But what is the Vitruvian Man? In fact, it’s not a man at all – it’s a Vitruvian Girl. The Vitruvian Girl is a fictional character designed by artist Ciro Marchetti in 1963 for an advertising campaign for a toothpaste called “Vitruvian Fruit Toothpaste”.
This imaginary girl was to symbolize the art of creating art – or at least that was what the company that created the image and shirt thought. Marchetti drew the image as a Vitruvian Man sleeping on a beach with his arms around a sleeping woman. Later he included rays and stars to make it look like the sun was shining through the window. When you buy the shirt, the image becomes a poster that hangs up on your wall until you wash it off.
Since this advertising campaign was a huge success and the image became a poster that was visible almost everywhere, a similar product was released for Halloween. The “Vitruvian Girl” now makes a retro tee shirt for Halloween. When you purchase this tee shirt, it comes with a free message that says, “I’m a Vitruvian Girl… Sleep with me.” You’ll also receive a special code in the post card that has your name and address.
